‘When you whack in your babies, plant them deep into the soil, right up to the lowest proper leaves, as these guys will root from the stalk. This will make the plant tough, buff and ready to grow!’: Read more from Sustainable Gardening Australia.

‘Don’t add fertiliser to the hole because tomato plants have an extremely low need for most fertilisers, especially nitrogen. Give them too much and they grow like mad because they are greedy and you get masses of foliage at the expense of fruit. But remember all tomato plants are potash hungry’: Read more from Peter Cundall’s ABC fact sheet.

‘Once the plants begin to grow, the real training begins. Allow only one stem to develop, and pluck off suckers (the sprouts that form between branches and the main stem) when they are very young’: Read more on how to grow huge tomatoes, from Organic Gardening.

Finally, take a look at this terrific site which maps local organic growers, farmers’ markets and gardens: Local harvest.
